That&#8217;s why we wrote this article for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is a pension?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pension usually refers to old-age pension &#8211; i.e. benefits paid out by the government to a person who has reached pension age and meets the social insurance history condition. Old-age pension is basically a salary substitute for that time of our lives when we deserve a good rest instead of full-time employment. Besides old-age pension, there are also disability, orphan&#8217;s and widow&#8217;s\/widower&#8217;s pensions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Old-age pension claim &#8211; general conditions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be eligible for an old-age pension, you have to meet two main conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Age<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, people 65 years of age are eligible to claim the old-age pension \u2013 this age applies to people born after 1965. Data for people born before 1965 can be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duchody-duchodci.cz\/duchodovy-vek.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HER<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take early retirement up to three years before reaching the standard retirement age, provided that you have worked for at least 40 years. However, the amount of the retirement pension will be lower than if you had waited until the standard retirement age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Social insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only people who have paid their social insurance for at least 35 years can currently claim pension benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a shorter insurance period and a higher retirement age are also possible)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The ways of paying social insurance differ based on whether you\u2019re an employee, self-employed, or working based on an agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Employee \u2013 employment contract<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employer pays social insurance for their employees \u2013 the amount is automatically deducted from their monthly salary.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Employee \u2013 agreement on completing a job (DPP) or agreement on performing work (DP\u010c)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The employer pays social insurance for employees on DPP only if their monthly salary is above 10 000 CZK. Social insurance for employees on DP\u010c is paid only if their salary exceeds <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 000 CZK.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Self-employed person (OSV\u010c)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any person running a business has to pay social insurance on their own through monthly deposits send to Czech Social Security Administration (\u010cSSZ). Starting up a business has to be reported to the \u010cSSZ by no later than the 8th day of the month following the month in which the business was started. Once a year, self-employed people have to submit a tax return in which their income is compared to their health and social insurance deposits and any potential overpayments or underpayments will be compensated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attending daily studies (this applies to studies in the Czech Republic before 2010.), taking care of a child under 4 years or a helpless disabled relative, time spent in military service, and time spent all count towards the 35 years of required social insurance. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are so-called substitute insurance periods, which primarily apply to Czech citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Old-age pension conditions when working abroad<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve worked in multiple countries,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ll receive a so-called partial pension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 i.e. from the governments of each of the countries, you\u2019ll receive an amount based on time spent insured in that country. However, this depends on how the old-age pension is set in the country you\u2019ve worked in (e.g. there are countries without any kind of old-age pension system) and further depends on whether the Czech Republic has a bilateral agreement with that country, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this allows for the aggregation of insurance period. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a Russian citizen who has worked 22 years in Ukraine, 8 years in Russia, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in each of these countries, he should be entitled to a partial retirement pension, the amount of which will be determined based on the length of time worked in that country (the calculation of the partial retirement pension is quite complex and may vary from country to country).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Applying for old-age pension<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can apply for a pension at a branch of the Czech Social Security Administration no earlier than 4 months before the required date of pension award. It is also possible to apply retrospectively, within 5 years of the expiry of the retirement period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Prague, you can apply for a pension at any branch of the Social Security Administration, which you can find HERE. If you do not have the required insurance period acquired solely in the Czech Republic but have also worked in other countries, you need to make an appointment for your application through the online appointment system of the Czech Social Security Administration at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/objednani.cssz.cz\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/objednani.cssz.cz\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and select the service: application for a pension with an international element.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t feel confident in your Czech language level yet, you may ask one of our intercultural to accompany you and interpret at this office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When applying, you\u2019ll have to present an identification document, submit several supporting documents \u2013 proofs of gainful activities (i.e. employment contracts, proofs of working abroad, employer\u2019s confirmations), proofs of study in the Czech Republic, documents proving taking care of children (e.g. birth certificates), personal records for pension insurance from your last employment, etc. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are unsure about the attached documents and need more information on how and under what conditions you can apply for a retirement pension, you can contact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icpraha.com\/poradenstvi\/socialni-poradenstvi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our social workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who will be happy to assist you during a consultation. You can arrange a personal or online meeting by calling: +420 252 543 846.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Paying out pension<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pension is paid out once a month. It can either be transferred to your bank account, or you can receive it in cash at any branch of the Czech Post. You can choose your preferred method when applying at the \u010cSSZ.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Carrying out a gainful activity when receiving pension<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retiring is not an obligation, but rather a right of any citizen of the Czech Republic. Even after retiring, you&#8217;ve still got the option to work. In that case, you&#8217;ve got several options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive full benefit and work &#8211; in that case, your pension increases by 0,4% each year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive only half the benefit and work &#8211; in that case, your pension increases by 3% each year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive no benefit and work &#8211; in that case, your pension increases by 6% each year.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Additional pension savings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might not be able to maintain the living standards you\u2019re used to with just the amount of the old-age pension that you\u2019ll be receiving. That\u2019s why we\u2019d recommend opting for additional pension savings. The state therefore recommends setting up supplementary pension savings. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The minimum saving amount is 500 CZK per month, and the state contributes 100 CZK. The higher the saving amount, the greater the state contribution (the maximum is 340 CZK for saving 1,800 CZK per month).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even your employer might contribute to the additional pension savings in some cases. You can withdraw the savings five years before reaching retirement age. It\u2019s also possible to withdraw them earlier, but you\u2019ll lose the government contribution.
